While reinventing the exterior façade of this downtown building, Scott Shields decided to retain the existing two-story granite cladding and stainless steel windows. Custom light fixtures were then designed to highlight these materials. A new stainless steel cornice was introduced to maintain focus on the street level and to draw the passerby’s attention to this building on Bay Street.
Meanwhile, to create a brighter, more open lobby, an enclosed exit stair was removed and replaced by an open-riser steel stair with a glass guard. Ceiling heights are maximized and slot lighting provides definition to the long, narrow space. The existing marble walls and stainless steel elevator doors were retained to maintain the quality of the original space.
